This set of six Catechisms follows the journey of the Catechumenate, and is primarily meant for those who are preparing for First Confession, First Holy Communion or Confirmation. These can also assist members of the Church in their desire to deepen their Christian faith, to experience the joy of being Disciples of Christ and to be his witnesses in today’s society. (Series 1 – 4 are also available in Swahili and Turkana, series 5 and 6 are in English only).
The
family is the first school of Christian education. Parents are the first
catechists who must take the responsibility for the religious formation of
their children. They hand over the Christian faith to the younger generation
through their prayers, teachings and example.
These
books are especially prepared for the Catechumenate to help them to deepen
their faith, to love Christ and to follow him with joy and enthusiasm. This Catechism
is a timely tool that will assist parents, parishes and schools in their task
of evangelisation, and in handing down the message through a new methodology
suitable for younger generations. Each lesson is divided into three parts: Things to Remember, Learn by Heart, and What Can I Do?
Owing
to the place held by parents and catechists in passing on the faith, their own
life example is very important for proper formation in the faith. Catechetical
instruction must be accompanied by practical Christian living. Parents in
particular, must be a living example to their children, concerning what it
means to be a Christian, which includes:
- Frequently taking the children to Church for Mass.
- Praying every day with the children the morning, and evening prayers as well as the prayers before and after meals.
- Revising the catechetical lesson with the children at home.
It is
hoped that parents and catechists will be strengthened in their Christian
commitment in fulfilling their mission of handing down the treasures of faith
to the children.
