In this Year of Faith, Pope Benedict XVI urges us to rediscover
and relive our faith. Rediscovering our faith must be a goal for all of us who
believe in God. To rediscover is not done just once, but it is a daily task of
every Christian. Faith is a gift of God, a treasure. It is like a precious
pearl, a hidden treasure that one has to look for, that will make him or her to
give up everything or sell all in order to buy it.
Perhaps, many will wonder why faith is being stressed in the Church.
Has faith been lost that we need to rediscover it? Faith has not been lost, but
it has been overshadowed by the earthly things that human nature craves for. Venerable Pope Paul VI said that everyone
admits that man is orientated toward the conquest of the kingdom of earth
rather than that of heaven; forgetfulness of God has become habitual, prompted
by the progress of science. The life we live in this present generation
continues to be marked by forgetfulness and deafness towards God. Venerable
Paul VI said, “We must learn the simplest and most basic lesson of the Second
Vatican Council, that, Christianity in its essence, consists in faith in God,
which is love of the Trinity, and in the encounter, both personal and
community, with Christ who directs and guides our life. The important thing
today, is to see with the eyes of faith that God is present, he takes care of
us, and he answers us.
During this Year of
Faith, we are encouraged by the Holy Father to read and study the Catechism of
the Catholic Church, the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church,
The Sacred Scriptures, The Journey of Faith, A Catholic Catechism, and the
Documents of Vatican Council II. Update yourself on the Year of Faith.
